When you enter the classroom....

I absolutely love this poster.  It was created by Ashley McKenzie.  She has a wonderful store on TpT.  This poster is a free download at her store.  She has some fabulous items.  I happened to stumble upon her poster on Pinterest then I checked out her store.  Go download it for your classroom.

I took the time tonight to create a few more Reading Strategy Posters.  The chevron theme posters that I have now are my biggest selling item.  I thought I would create it in different themes.  Go check them out at my store.

Here is a preview of the new theme.  Let me know what you think.

Thanks for stopping by and leaving a comment.

Being Resilient

In my Educational Leadership magazine this month, is an article called Handle with Care.  It is written by Amy Azzam over a conversation with Maya Angelou.  She was asked How does resilience develop, and how can we instill it in others?  Resilience is obviously a good thing to have.  But some kids-impoverished kids, kids from minority groups- are repeatedly callled on to have more of it than others.

If children are given the chance to believe they're worth something, they will work harder for you.  Don't just teach because that's all you can do.  Teach because it's your calling.  You have a responisiblity to young children.  Your responsibility is to care about them.  Be that one teacher that reached out and connected to a child.  Remember this:  Although a supportive school environment has a postitive effect on ALL children, it has an even greater effect on children who've been exposed to higher levels of risk.

How can your school or you as a teacher best support kids this year?

How to Make Word Walls More INTERACTIVE! Part 2

Last week I wrote the following blog about Interactive Word Walls using Sticky Notes for Grades 3-4 Math.  Since then, I created Grade 2 Math and I have created more products for ELA too. Please take a minute and check them out below the math section.

Do you struggle to make your word wall interactive?  Is your word wall just a decorative item in the classroom?  I have an idea on how to get the students more involved and actively participating in creating the word wall.

Interactive Word Wall cards allows the student of the day to illustrate/define the math vocabulary word and place it on the word wall card.  The students are actively engaged and participating in the lesson.

Over 60 high frequency math content words included plus blank cards too!
Grade level 3-4

The rest of the class use their smaller cards to illustrate and define the word.  Their small cards could be used to make a math vocabulary book, flash cards or keep in their notebooks.

Every student is participating!
The teacher is no longer creating the word wall.

Make your word walls more engaging and get all your students participating.

Sticky notes allow you to use the cards all year long and year after year.

I love this idea.  I hope you do too.  Enjoy- Stephanie

Jazz Up Your Word Walls!

Everyone should take a few minutes and update their word walls, bulletin boards and wall charts each year.  It gives a renewed and refreshed look.  Out with the old...in with the new.  Check out this way to add a little life and color to your word wall...

Add the alphabet circles and ribbons to your word wall and hang your sight words from the ribbon.  Just the right touch of perfection!  My teachers use ribbon and some use paper streamer.  Paper streamer is very cheap.  We all need to save a few dollars, right?

Customize it with your grade level words.

How to Follow Your Favorite Blogs

Over the last few weeks, I have been asked several times how to follow a blog.  There are several different ways to follow.  Let me walk you through it.

Following a blog shows authors and readers of the blog that you're a fan, and you can keep track of the blogs you follow via your Reading List on the Blogger dashboard.

Follow via Google +

One of the easiest ways is to visit a blog that has added the Following widget and click on the "Join this site" button under the "Followers" widget:

Google+ is very easy if you already have a gmail account.

Follow via Bloglovin’

I have found Bloglovin’.  You just enter the link or blog that you love and add it to the list..
Check out Principal Principles over there.
click on image to go see!

Follow by Email

You can simply add you email address in the sidebar and every time I post you can read it through your email account.

Follow via Pinterest- I love pinterest!

Take a minute and check out Principal Principles pinterest board.  I add something to it almost daily.

Follow via Facebook

I think everyone has facebook these days.  Well, maybe not everyone but almost everyone.

Follow via Teachers Pay Teachers

I hope this has helped some of you weigh the options of how to follow your favorite blogs! I love reading blogs, but my time is limited. It’s nice to be able to see what is going on and different days choose different methods to check out the creativity.

Did you learn something new???

Team Building & Fun!

Last night I took my campus leaders out for dinner and then we headed over to Painting with a Twist.  It was so much fun.  We had to paint a Bob Ross Purple Majesty Landscape.  I'm not sure if you have ever seen Bob Ross.  If not, google him.  We also had to paint a Bob Ross face on a paper plate.  The best Bob Ross face won a T-shirt.  Well, guess who won?  ME!  Check out our team building Saturday night pictures.

 My leadership team

 Here we are again.

Having fun listening to music, singing and painting.

 Just the Pittsburg girls.

It was nice to get out of our comfort zones and create and laugh a little before Monday morning.
What do you do at your school to build a strong team?

Make Today Amazing!

I know this video was a highly viewed video 5 years ago.  However, the message is still the same.  It's inspiring.  If you haven't watched it, you should.  It is wonderfully encouraging.  This is exactly what we all need to hear when we go back to school. Dalton Sherman's, "Do you believe in me" speech is guaranteed to rub off on you.

Do you believe your students can achieve?  Believe.  Make Today Amazing.

Tips & Tricks - So excited!

This is a picture of my computer screen and how I organized my files!  LOVE

I'm super excited about this tip.  I created a slide in powerpoint and added a few doodle frames with an oh so cute gray chevron background.   I save the slide as a jpeg file and placed it in my computer as the background.  After it was uploaded,  I took all my gazillion icons and rearranged them in each frame.  I love it!

I created the steps for you in case you need to know how to do it for yourself.

 Creating the Chevron Background:

Adding the Doodle Frames

The only thing left for you to do is changing your background screen to your new picture.  Once you have changed your background, then arrange all your icons on your desktop and categorize them.

This simple thing is making my life so much easier!

Enjoy- Stephanie

Preparing for Staff Development - Teacher Inservice 2013

Here are a few pictures from today of how I prepared for the Big Staff Development Week. Preparing for multi-presentations is time consuming and it can be difficult to keep it all straight. This is how I prepared or should I say how I'm still preparing.   I created tubs and labeled them for each day of the week.  Each tub contains all the materials for my presentations.  As you can see I'm not finished because some of the tubs are not very full.  I guess I will be pulling long hours this week and weekend.

I labeled each tub with the days of the week.

All 50+ of my teachers get a tub too and a teacher binder.  The binder is used all year and contains schedules, calendars, lesson plans, etc...  The tubs are very important in the summer.  As I complete documents for them I add it in the tub.  When teachers return, they pick up the tub and carry it to their classroom.  Easy and Organized.

Here is my training room or AKA my large music room where all the training takes place.

We must have refreshments!  Water and soft drinks and a bit of chocolate too.

"You put the Fiz in our School Bizz"

"Back to School 2013 will be a Piece of Cake"

You can download the Piece of Cake label, soft drink label and water bottle label.  Just go to my previous post on Treats for Teachers.

My Presentations for next week:

Faculty Meeting-campus procedures, laws, etc...
Bullying
State Accountability
Website Design (teachers are creating their class webpages)
Accelerated Reader and Math

Plus- Grade Level Meetings, Board Meeting, District Breakfast, Meet-the-Teacher, etc...

Exhausted....how about you?  What are you training on during staff development?
